Characterized by a knocking sound from the front suspension on the Discovery 4, mostly noticeable at low speed, drive vehicle forward and in reverse while applying the foot brake. If you hear a clonk as soon as the brake pedal is depressed then it is likely to be the lower suspension arm bushes.

Discovery 4 Repairs - Front Hub and Bearing

A grinding or rumbling noise that gets worse when turning and gets louder the faster you travel often indicates a worn wheel bearing. To check, jack up the wheel and feel for play by rocking the wheel from top to bottom. If you find play here or the wheel feels rough when rotated then the complete hub and bearing assembly needs to be replaced.

Discovery 4 Repairs - Front Differential

A heavy clonking (worst case wheels will lock up) or a drone or whine from dry bearings indicates a failing or failed front diff. Drop a small amount of oil from the differential into a clear jug and look for silver filings (looks like glitter) in the oil, if it is present then the gears are wearing and the diff needs replacing.

Discovery 4 Repairs - Front Driveshaft
The most common issue with a Discovery 4 front driveshaft is a knock when turning indicating a worn CV joint. Splines can also wear however, resulting in a limited connection to the drivetrain and eventually the splines will be so worn that the driveshaft will just slip and no longer turn the wheel.

Screeching or locked and hot rear wheels can be caused by the handbrake shoes collapsing meaning that either the contact material has come away from the metal shoe and jammed or one of the mechanisms has broken causing them to lock up. Sometimes this can cause damage to the discs which means they will also need to be replaced.

If the handbrake has locked the rear wheels and will not release then this can be a sign that the actuator has seized. Most times it can be released using the emergency release cable under the handbrake button.
