The Td5 was the last diesel engine developed in-house by the Land Rover engineering team and was used in all diesel Discovery 2 and Defender models between 1998 and 2006.

As the name suggests, the Td5 uses a rather uncommon 5 cylinder layout and replaced the ageing 300Tdi 4 cylinder. Power went from 111BHP in the old engine up to 136BHP on Discovery 2 models but what was more impressive was the 221 LBS-FT of torque affording both the Defender and Disco 2 tremendous pulling power.

Further upgrades from earlier engines included electronic fuel injection and engine management systems, adding some complexity but also helping to increase overall refinement.

Whilst it is reliable overall, there are a few areas on the Td5 which can cause concern. K Motors have been working on Td5 Defenders and Discovery 2s for decades now and are aware of all problem points with this engine.

Here is a list of some of the more common Td5 engine problems along with symptoms and average repair costs.

Td5 Engine - Diagnostic Check

If you have any warning lights illuminating on your dash or fault warnings on the display or simply feel that your vehicle isn’t running as well as it should be then the first step is to get a full diagnostic report. This will show any faults that the ECU has recorded since it was last cleared.
Full diagnostic health check and report£69
Td5 Engine - Injector Wiring Loom Replacement

If you are seeing an engine management light, general erratic running behavior or poor starting, this can be caused by engine oil escaping around the injector wiring loom seal and making its way into the main engine harness and the ECU itself.
Replace injector wiring loom and clean contaminated connections. £95
Td5 Engine - Head Gasket Replacement

Land Rover® used plastic dowels to locate the head onto the block on early TD5 models. The dowels can break and allow the head to move around, leading to head gasket failure, This is a phenomenon known as cylinder head shuffle. Sometimes an area of the engine bore can be chipped out by one of the valves due to the head having moved relative to the block. This can look serious but the damage rarely protrudes lower than the top ring on the piston. In this case, the engine does not have to be completely rebuilt.
Remove cylinder head, pressure test and replace with metal dowels and new head bolts. From £795
Td5 Engine - Injector Washer Replacement

Diesel can leak past the injector washers on these engines which will lead to a build-up of diesel in the sump. It is possible for the engine to run out of control and even fail completely if this happens (If you notice the dipstick level is too high on your TD5 engine, stop driving the vehicle and get it checked out).
Replace injector washers and test£195
TD5 Engine - Cracked Fuel Rail

Unfortunately, the fuel rail on Td5 engines is an integral part of the engine head, if it cracks, a similar situation to injector washer failure will occur where diesel makes its way into the oil. It is possible for the engine to run out of control and even fail completely if this happens (If you notice the dipstick level is too high on your TD5 engine, stop driving the vehicle and get it checked out).
