AdBlue Issues – Diesel Models

The new shape Range Rover Evoque diesel models are all equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, This system injects Urea (AdBlue) into the exhaust to stop harmful Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) from being emitted. SCR is quite a complex system and needs to be treated with care to avoid expensive repairs. If the system runs out of AdBlue, the car will become immobilised until the system is topped up, but if overfilled, the NOx sensors monitoring emissions levels can sometimes fail and these are not cheap to replace.

The SCR system could also start injecting too much fluid into the system too, this leads to excessive AdBlue consumption and generally indicates a fault with the system such as contamination or a sensor failure. If you have noticed an increase in AdBlue consumption or any other unusual behavior it is advised to book your vehicle in for diagnostics.

DPF Failure – Diesel Models

Diesel Range Rover Evoques use a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). The DPF catches the soot that is normally emitted from the exhaust system and holds it in a chamber until it can be burnt off at high temperatures during a DPF regeneration. DPF Regens occur passively when the vehicle is used on a long run at high speed such as a motorway journey.

If the vehicle isn’t subjected to high speed, high temperature conditions like this once every couple of weeks, the DPF will fill up and an active regeneration will take place, this is where extra fuel is injected into the engine, raising the internal temperatures of the engine and exhaust system. Some owners may not realise regeneration is in progress and may switch the vehicle off before a regeneration is completed, meaning the system will still be partially blocked. If this happens too many times it can cause the red DPF warning light to appear on the dash with the following message “Exhaust Filter Full Visit Dealer”. We see this quite a lot on vehicles used primarily for stop / start city driving.

K Motors perform diagnostics on JLR DPF systems and if there are no faults we try to force a regeneration using our Autologic system before proceeding to a manual DPF clean. Unfortunately though, sometimes an expensive new DPF will be the only option.

EGR Valve – Diesel Models

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve (EGR) recirculates burnt carbon from the exhaust system back into the engine so it can be burnt off to keep emissions down. Over time, particularly if the vehicle is used for short journeys, a build up of carbon can prevent the valve from opening and closing properly. This blockage will likely cause excessive smoke and a loss of power and will illuminate the engine management light on the dash.

EGR Valve Replacement – £680

Turbocharger Replacement – 2.0 Diesel

The 2.0 Diesel Evoque can suffer from turbocharger failure. The most common symptoms of turbo failure include a loss of power and the engine management light.

If a failure is caused by an oil leak on the turbocharger itself and that leak makes its way into the exhaust system, you may notice a large amount of blue smoke coming out the exhaust which gets worse under acceleration.

Sometimes, a turbocharger will give also some advanced warning of failure, you may hear a siren like whine or whistle that gets progressively worse and is louder under load. This can be a sign of a leaking boost pipe, but could also indicate a turbo on its last legs.

Turbo replacement is often not as simple as removal and fitment of a new part either, because any contamination in the oil delivery system could cause a new turbo to fail shortly after it is installed. When fitting new turbos at K Motors, we perform a full engine flush and recommend replacement of parts which we feel are at risk of contamination including intercoolers, feed pipes and oil filter screens.

Front Hub And Bearing

Grinding or rumbling noise from one front corner that gets worse when turning or louder the faster you travel often indicates a worn front wheel bearing. To check for a wheel bearing failure, jack up the offending corner until the wheel is clear from the ground and feel for play by rocking the wheel from top to bottom. If you can feel movement then both the wheel hub and the bearing need to be replaced. Sometimes when rotating the wheel there will also be a perceived roughness.

It is important to replace worn wheel bearings before they fail completely as the wheel may separate from the vehicle!

Brake Discs and Pads

Brake pads and discs are service items with lifespans that will vary depending on how a vehicle is driven. The average lifespan for a set of brake discs on the Range Rover Evoque is approximately 32,000 miles before they get too thin to maintain optimum braking performance.

If worn brake pads are spotted before the metal backing starts rubbing on and scoring the discs, Then a pad swap may be all that is needed. If however, the brake discs are scored, it is advised to change both the brake pads and discs to make sure the brake pads can bed in properly avoiding squealing.

Front Brake Discs And Pads Replacement – From £345

Rear Brake Pads Replacement – From £250

Rear Brake Discs And Pads Replacement – From £510

Door Latch

The Evoque uses the same design of door latches to all other JLR vehicles, unfortunately, this means they are prone to failure. If you have a failing or failed door latch, you may find that you can’t lock the vehicle or have activated the central locking but you are still able to open one of the doors. All the parts of the door latch mechanism are built into one sealed unit, so the complete latch assembly will need replacing. Luckily, we have replaced many of these latches in the past and have the experience to keep labour times down to an absolute minimum.
