Timing Chain Failure – 2.0 Diesel

Timing chain failure is unfortunately a very common issue on the 2 litre diesel engine found in the Velar. Failure is generally caused by oil dilution from incomplete DPF regenerations or an insufficient oil change schedule. Initial symptoms of failure are a rattling noise on cold start and sometimes a Restricted Performance message on the dash.

If failing chains are left for too long, they can jump time or snap causing the pistons to hit the valves, effectively destroying the engine. The plastic guides that the chains run along can also cause problems too. As they wear over time, plastic particles from the guides can make their way into the engine oil pickup system blocking it, this can lead to spun crankshaft bearings causing a bottom end failure as well as turbo failures due to the lack of oil supply.

If you have failing timing chains the solution is to replace the chains along with new guides, idlers and tensioners.

Turbo Failure – Diesel Models

Turbos are known to fail on the 2.0 Ingenium diesel engine, and the Velar is no different. If you experience a drastic loss of power along with an engine management light, potentially accompanied by a large amount of blue smoke, it is likely you are experiencing a turbocharger failure.

Sometimes, a turbocharger can give also some advanced warning of failure, you may hear a siren like noise that gets progressively worse. This is often a sign of a split boost pipe but can also be an indicator that a turbo is not long for this world.

Turbo Replacement is not as simple as removal and fitment of a new part either, because any contamination in the oil delivery system could potentially cause a new turbo to fail shortly after installation. When installing new turbos, K Motors perform a full engine oil flush and will recommend replacement of parts which we feel are at risk of contamination including intercoolers, feed pipes and filter screens.

Piston Cooling Oil Jet Solenoid – 2.0 Diesel

The 2.0 diesel engine fitted to the Range Rover Velar uses an electronically controlled solenoid to manage oil flow to the piston cooling jets. These jets help keep piston temperatures under control when the engine is under load, reducing stresses and wear on the internals.

However, the solenoid used to control these jets on the 2.0 Ingenium engine is prone to failure, usually triggered by coolant leaking from the thermostat housing onto the solenoid body and connector.

AdBlue Issues – Diesel Models

The diesel Range Rover Velar is fitted with SCR technology. Selective Catalytic Reduction is a method of filtration that uses Urea (AdBlue) to chemically neutralize the harmful Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions coming out of the exhaust. SCR systems are critical to the running of the vehicle now, for example, if the system runs out of AdBlue, the car will not start until the system is topped up, but if overfilled, the internal sensors can sometimes fail causing the system to malfunction.

The SCR system can also add too much AdBlue to the exhaust system if something is wrong, This could be due to contamination or sensor failure.

If you have noticed any issues with the SCR system fitted to your Velar it is advised that you book it in for a diagnostic inspection.

DPF Failure – Diesel Models

All diesel Velar models are equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The DPF catches the soot in the exhaust system and keeps it contained until the car is has reached a hot enough sustained temperature to burn it off. This is called passive DPF regeneration and occurs most commonly on long high speed journeys like a dual carriageway run.

If a vehicle is used more in stop / start or slow traffic, these high temperatures will likely never be reached and the DPF will fill up to the point that an active regeneration has to take place, this is where extra fuel is injected into the engine to artificially raise the combustion temperature to meet the conditions required for a DPF regen. Some owners may not realise this is happening and might switch the vehicle off before a regeneration is completed, if this happens too often, it can cause the red DPF warning light to appear on the dash with the message “Exhaust Filter Full Visit Dealer”.

We see many vehicles with this error message on the dash and have a few procedures we work through to try and prevent an expensive and sometimes unnecessary DPF replacement. We start off by scanning for fault codes using our Autologic diagnostic systems, if we cannot identify a failed sensor or other issue, we will force an active regeneration to clear the blockage. If the issue still isn’t resolved, we move onto manually cleaning the DPF. Unfortunately though, sometimes a new Particulate Filter will be required.

Throttle Body Failure – 3.0 Diesel

3 litre diesel Velars are known to suffer from clogged throttle bodies which can then cause the “Restricted Performance” message to appear on the dash. If left unresolved, this can also prevent the engine from completing a DPF regeneration cycle, eventually triggering a ‘DPF Full’ red warning and causing further issues down the line.

Thankfully, throttle body replacement on these engines is straightforward, please hit the button below for symptoms, diagnostics and a step by step throttle body replacement guide with a fully costed estimate included.

Inlet Manifold / Rocker Cover Leaks – 3.0 Diesel

Inlet manifolds / rocker covers can also cause the infamous Restricted Performance message on 3.0 Velar models. If the error tends to show when the engine is under load it can point to a leaking gasket, but these engines are also known to crack the inlet manifolds as they are made of a brittle plastic.

For a detailed guide on what causes the inlet manifolds to fail, the fault codes associated, a step by step repair procedure and estimate, please head to our repair guide using the button below.

Timing Belt – 3.0 Diesel

The timing belt on 3.0 diesel Velars needs to be changed every 7 years or 112,000 miles, whichever comes first. It is essential to make sure this is done on or before this interval, as if the timing belt snapped, The pistons will make contact with the valves causing severe damage.

For a step by step guide on timing belt replacement for the 3.0 V6 Diesel engines and a full K Motors estimate please hit the button below.

Brake Discs and Pads

As with all large Range Rover vehicles, the Velar can chew through brakes and can wear out a set of discs in less than 32,000 miles. It is also important to monitor brake pad wear too, as if the brake pads wear down far enough, the metal backing of the pads will score the discs.

In order to avoid squealing due to poor bedding in of new pads, we recommend replacing both the brake pads and discs if there is a considerable lip on the discs. As mentioned above, scored discs will also require replacing for optimal performance.

Door Lock Replacement

The Velar uses the same door latches as other JLR vehicles and they are prone to failing. If there is an issue with one of your door latches, you may find that you cannot lock the vehicle or have activated the central locking but you are still able to open one of the doors. As all the parts of the mechanism are in a sealed unit the complete latch assembly will need replacing.

Door Handles Stuck

The stylish flush type door handles that complete the Velar’s sleek design unfortunately can cause some issues. You might notice that after unlocking and entering the vehicle one of the door handles may get stuck and won’t retract when the vehicle starts moving, or the handle may jump back into position making a thudding noise.

Sometimes a handle may appear crooked or just refuse to come out when the car is unlocked, all of these problems listed can sometimes be solved with a simple inspection and some lubrication but unfortunately, sometimes a new handle mechanism will be required.
