Land Rover 3.0 TDV6 Long Engine Replacement
Summary
The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines fitted to Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport models deliver excellent torque and refinement but are known for crankshaft and bearing failures. When the crankshaft snaps or bearings spin, the only reliable fix is a full long engine replacement. At K Motors we supply and fit fully reconditioned 3.0 TDV6 long engines from NWS Motor Services, each hot-tested and supplied with a 12-month or 30,000-mile warranty.
The complete supply and installation package costs £7394 including VAT for models up to 2015.
Common failure reasons
Although improved from the 2.7 TDV6, the 3.0-litre version retains the same narrow bearing design that can cause crankshaft fatigue and oil starvation. Extended oil change intervals, blocked pick-up strainers or low-quality servicing accelerate wear. When the bearing shells spin, oil flow is lost and the crank can fracture, usually without warning. Other contributing factors include injector seal leaks, carbon build-up restricting oil galleries, and coolant contamination from EGR cooler leaks. Once a knock or oil pressure drop is detected, the damage progresses quickly, and rebuilding the bottom end is rarely cost-effective.
Vehicles affected
- Discovery 4 (2009 – 2016)
- Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 / SDV6 (2010 – 2019)
- Range Rover L405 3.0 TDV6 (2013 – 2019 selected models)
We supply the correct Euro 5 or Euro 6 engine variant for your specific vehicle during quotation and installation.
Whatās included in a reconditioned 3.0 TDV6 long engine
Every engine is stripped, chemically cleaned, machined, and rebuilt with OEM-quality components. The rebuild includes a new or reground crankshaft, pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump, water pump, timing belts and tensioners, and fully refurbished cylinder heads. All gaskets, core plugs, and seals are replaced. Each engine is hot-run and pressure-tested at NWS Motor Services to confirm oil flow and compression before dispatch, and supplied on an exchange basis with full warranty.
Installation process
Replacing a 3.0 TDV6 long engine is a major operation requiring approximately 16 hours of skilled labour. The body is usually lifted from the chassis for full access to the drivetrain. Our technicians remove the failed unit, clean the oil and cooling systems, fit the reconditioned engine, and replace all fluids and filters. We also install a new oil cooler, check the turbochargers for contamination, and inspect the DPF and EGR assemblies. Once fitted, the ECU is reprogrammed and the vehicle road-tested.
If turbo, injector, or cooling faults are found, we provide a clear estimate so they can be corrected during the same job. Fixing these root causes at installation ensures the new engine achieves long service life and locks in your 12 month warranty from NWS and K Motors.
Fitted cost (models up to 2015)
- Reconditioned 3.0 TDV6 long engine (exchange): £4250
- Labour (16 hours @ £79.50/hr): £1272
- Gaskets, seals, fluids, filters: £240
- Oil cooler and EGR flush: £300
- ECU setup, diagnostics and road test: £100
Subtotal £6162 + VAT £1232 = £7394 including VAT.
The Gen 2 long engine is more expensive due the cost of pistons and other components with the total price coming in at £9614 including VAT
A refundable £1300 core surcharge may be applied if the old engine has a snapped crankshaft or damaged block.
Failure symptoms and diagnostic clues
Typical early signs include rhythmic knocking from the lower block, sudden loss of oil pressure, or metallic debris found in the oil filter.
Some engines suffer instant seizure without warning. Diagnostic fault codes such as P06DD (oil pressure control), P132A (turbo boost correlation), or P1335 (crank sensor error) may also appear. Once a knock develops, continued running usually results in complete failure within minutes.
Preventative measures
To extend the life of a 3.0 TDV6, we recommend oil and filter changes every 6000 miles using synthetic-based oil. Replace both oil filters at every service, inspect and clean the oil pickup pipe, and keep the EGR and breather systems free from carbon buildup. Maintaining clean turbo oil feeds and avoiding extended idling helps prevent bearing wear. Early investigation of any unusual noise or oil pressure warning can often save an engine from complete failure.
Warranty and service
