Land Rover 2.7 TDV6 Long Engine Replacement
Summary
The 2.7 TDV6 diesel engine, fitted to Discovery 3 and Range Rover Sport models from 2004 to 2009, delivers excellent performance but is known for crankshaft and bearing failures. When this happens, the only lasting solution is a complete long engine replacement. At K Motors we fit fully reconditioned 2.7 TDV6 long engines supplied by NWS Motor Services, each hot-tested and covered by a 12-month or 30,000-mile warranty.
Supply and installation costs £5666 including VAT.
Why 2.7 TDV6 engines fail
The 2.7 TDV6 offers smooth torque delivery but suffers from a weak bottom end design. The crankshaft can fracture between the second and third main bearings, often following oil starvation or bearing shell rotation. Contributing factors include blocked oil pickups, poor servicing, injector seal leaks and coolant contamination from EGR cooler failure. Once a knock develops or oil pressure drops, internal damage spreads rapidly and repair is no longer economical.
Vehicles affected
- Discovery 3 (2004ā2009)
- Range Rover Sport 2.7 TDV6 (2005ā2009)
- Jaguar S-Type and XF 2.7D models
We supply and install the correct engine variant for your vehicle, including both Euro 3 and Euro 4 configurations.
What the reconditioned long engine includes
Each engine is completely stripped, cleaned, machined and rebuilt using OEM-quality components. It includes a new or reground crankshaft, pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump, timing belts and tensioners, water pump, refurbished cylinder heads, gaskets and seals. Every unit is pressure-tested and hot-run to confirm oil pressure and compression before installation.
All engines carry a 12-month or 30,000-mile warranty from NWS Motor Services.
Installation process
Replacing a 2.7 TDV6 long engine is a painstaking operation involving around 16 hours of labour. The body is normally lifted from the chassis for full access. During installation we flush the lubrication system, replace the oil cooler, renew all fluids and filters, check the turbos for end float, and inspect the DPF and breather assemblies where applicable. Once fitted, the ECU is programmed and the vehicle road-tested.
If any secondary issues are found, such as turbo wear, injector leakage or EGR cooler failure, we provide a clear estimate before carrying out additional work. Correcting these problems during installation is the best way to protect your new engine and is essential to secure your NWS warranty.

Symptoms and diagnostic clues
Early warning signs include a dull knock from the crank area, oil pressure warnings, or metallic debris in the oil. Fault codes such as P06DD (oil pressure control), P0340 (camshaft position) or P1335 (crank correlation) may also appear. Once these symptoms are present, internal failure is usually advanced and a replacement is required.
Maintenance and prevention
To extend the life of a 2.7 TDV6, change oil every 6000 miles using quality synthetic-based oil.
Replace both oil filters at each service, and inspect the oil pickup pipe and breather system regularly.
Keep the cooling and EGR systems clean to prevent contamination.
Investigate any noise or oil pressure fluctuation immediately to avoid crankshaft damage.

Every 2.7 TDV6 long engine fitted by K Motors carries a 12-month / 30,000-mile warranty.
Pricing includes fluids, ECU re-programming, testing and VAT.
Turnaround time is typically 3ā4 working days.
