For Freelander 2 Repairs you need look no further than us here at K Motors, Independent Specialists in Land Rover repairs since 1957.

Compared to the previous Freelander, the reliability and build quality have taken a huge leap forward. It is 50mm longer and 109mm wider and the wheels have been moved further toward each corner giving more space inside and seriously increasing its off road capability. The Freelander 2 is packed with technology and is full of advanced electronic equipment which means pretty much every fault requires the vehicle being hooked up to specialist diagnostic equipment. This in turn means that if things do go wrong, then repairs may be beyond the scope of DIY mechanics.

As well as the extensive knowledge and experience we have built up in Freelander 2 repairs over the years, we also have the very latest Autologic diagnostic equipment and technical support to aid in any fault finding. Here we have a list of the more common Freelander 2 faults, symptoms and costs* to repair.

Freelander 2 Repairs - Rear Differential

The rear differential is a fairly common failure point on pre 2009 Freelander 2s, there will be a whining or droning coming from the rear diff particularly noticeable when driving at a constant higher speed.
Replace rear differential (Recon Unit with Heavy Duty Bearings)£1125
Freelander 2 Repairs - Rear Differential Haldex Pump

The Haldex pump applies the torque to the rear diff when pulling away or during slow speed manoeuvring creating a 4WD system. It can make a low humming noise when it is failing but the biggest tell tale sign is the traction control light being illuminated with a 'Traction Reduced' warning message in the panel.
Replace Haldex pump (OEM)£475
Freelander 2 Repairs - Power Steering Pump Reservoir

If you suddenly start hearing a whine when you are steering then there are three common causes; the first to check is the power steering fluid reservoir, there is a gauze filter at the bottom which can get blocked and cause a lack of hydraulic fluid being supplied to the pump making it run dry.
Replace PAS reservoir, flush system and replace fluid (Gen LR)£86
Freelander 2 Repairs - Power Steering Pump

A whine from the steering system and starting to feel heavier when driving can be a sign that the steering pump is on its way out, it is also worth checking the gauze filter on the reservoir in case it is blocked as this may be the reason for the worn power steering pump in the first place.
Replace steering pump (OEM)£375
Freelander 2 Repairs - Steering Rack

Steering rack issues are a fault most commonly found on pre 2008 Freelander 2s where during the manufacture of the rack, remnants of the welding process were not flushed out properly, causing swarf to contaminate the system which prevents the power steering fluid from flowing properly. The vehicle will steer without problems under normal driving conditions but when you slow to pull into a parking space for example the steering will become really heavy and very difficult to turn. We would always advise changing the power steering fluid reservoir if the rack is to be replaced.
Replace steering rack (Genuine LR)£1165
Freelander 2 Repairs - Front Wheel Bearing

A grinding or rumbling noise that gets worse when turning and gets louder the faster you travel often indicates a worn wheel bearing. To check, jack up the wheel and feel for play by rocking the wheel from top to bottom. If you find play here or the wheel feels rough when rotated then the complete hub and bearing assembly needs to be replaced.
Replace front wheel bearing and hub (OEM)£325
Freelander 2 Repairs - Clutch Replacement

A slipping clutch will cause the engine to rev higher while the vehicle does not accelerate as quickly. Another sign that the clutch is failing is that the indicator on the dash which informs of the gear the vehicle is in is slow to react when you change gear.
Replace clutch cover, clutch plate and slave cylinder (OEM)£649
Freelander 2 Repairs - Clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel Replacement

A dual mass flywheel absorbs the vibration from the engine and rarely outlasts a clutch, we would always advise replacing both at the same time.
Replace clutch cover, clutch plate, slave cylinder and flywheel (OEM)£1085
Freelander 2 Repairs - Rear Shock Absorbers

A knocking from the rear of the vehicle most noticeable over potholes can be a variety of different issues but the most common one we come across is a faulty rear strut. Look for oil seeping out from the piston part of the shock absorber.
Replace rear strut (OEM)£176
Freelander 2 Repairs - Suspension Tie Bars (Drop Links)

A light rattle when travelling over speed bumps or potholes is generally an indication of worn bushes in the tie bars (also known as anti roll bar drop links).
Replace suspension drop link (OEM) each£75
Freelander 2 Repairs - Ignition Key Dock

If you can pull the key out of its dock whilst the engine is running or it won't eject it when you push it in, then the ignition key dock requires replacing. It may operate fine for a while without the eject function working but at some point the ECU will decide it is a security risk and you will be unable to start the engine.
Replace ignition key dock (Genuine LR)£280
Freelander 2 Repairs - Door Latch Replacement

The door latches are prone to failing on Freelander 2 models, you may find that you cannot lock the vehicle or you have activated the central locking but you are still able to open one of the doors. As all the parts of the mechanism are now in one sealed unit the complete latch assembly will need replacing.
Replace door latch (Genuine LR)£230
Freelander 2 Repairs - Intercooler Hoses

If you are experiencing a loss of power and black smoke from the exhaust then a common cause is a split in the intercooler hose. Sometimes the engine management light will be illuminated on the dash but not always.
Replace intercooler hose (Genuine LR)£170
Freelander 2 Repairs - Cam Belt Replacement

Land Rover recommend changing the timing belt at 150,000 miles or 10 years whichever comes first. However we do recommend it is done earlier especially if you are unsure of the history of the vehicle as repairing an engine once the belt has snapped is very expensive. We replace not just the belt but the idlers, pulleys and water pump at the same time.
Replace timing belt, idlers & water pump (OEM)£475
Freelander 2 Repairs - Fuel Gauge Faults
If you have noticed that your fuel gauge is reading incorrectly then this can be caused by a faulty fuel sender (there are 2 in each tank) or a faulty ECU. However, sometimes it can just be an issue with the connectors that attach the wiring loom to the fuel sender units which can be replaced. It is a common fault with a number of Land Rover models. Be careful if you are thinking that you can live with a incorrect reading on the dash because if the ECU thinks the tank is empty it will stop the engine to prevent any damage and not start again and you can guarantee it will do it at the most inconvenient time and location.
Replace fuel pump sender connections (Genuine LR)£220
Replace fuel pump sender connections (Genuine LR)£420
Replace both fuel pump sender units (Genuine LR)£695
Freelander 2 Repairs - Front Brake Pad Replacement

If worn out brake pads are spotted early before any damage is caused to the disc then just the pads can be changed. Unlike all the other Land Rovers the Freelander 2 does not have wear sensors so there is no warning light to come on. It is worthwhile to do visual checks occasionally, if you leave it until you hear the metal on metal sound then you will need to replace the discs as well as they will have been scored by the metal body of the brake pads.
Front brake pads replacement (both sides OEM)£105
Freelander 2 Repairs - Front Brake Discs and Pads

If brake pads have worn low and scored the discs then it is advisable to change both for optimum performance. The average life of brake discs is around 32,000 miles, after this they are considered too thin and will have a lip around the edge where just fitting new pads will take too long to bed in and most likely cause a squealing sound each time you apply the brakes.
Front brake discs and pads replacement (Both sides)£215
Freelander 2 Repairs - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

If worn out brake pads are spotted early before any damage is caused to the disc then just the pads can be changed. Unlike all the other Land Rovers the Freelander 2 does not have wear sensors so there is no warning light to come on. It is worthwhile to do visual checks occasionally, if you leave it until you hear the metal on metal sound then you will need to replace the discs as well as they will have been scored by the metal body of the brake pads.
Rear brake pads replacement (both sides OEM)£95

Freelander 2 Repairs - Handbrake Shoes
Screeching or locked up and hot rear wheels can be caused by the handbrake shoes collapsing, meaning either the contact material has come away from the metal shoe and jammed or one of the mechanisms has broken causing them to lock up. Sometimes this can cause damage to the discs which means they will also need to be replaced.
Handbrake shoe replacement (both sides OEM)£205
Handbrake shoes, discs and pads replacement (both sides OEM)£375
