Common Problems and Fixes - Freelander
The most common problem on the Freelander (to 2006) is the seizing of the viscous unit which is situated between the propshafts. This causes transmission wind up and can lead to failure of the transfer box (IRD) and/or the rear differential. Early symptoms include the scrubbing off of the inside of the rear tyres. To test your vehicle, reverse it around a corner. It should freewheel rather than coming to an abrupt halt.
The other major weak point is the notorious 1.8 Petrol engine which is prone to multiple head gasket failures.
We have over 400 Freelanders on our repair books and whatever issue you may have, we have probably diagnosed and repaired it before.
