Step 1 - Test drive, diagnostics and oil inspection.
It is not certain that your transmission has failed should you experience these problems. We recommend that you bring your Range Rover to us for a diagnosis where a qualified technician will test drive the vehicle (over a very short distance) and analyse the faults on our Autologic diagnostic system.
Once we have discounted the possibility of an electrical fault, we will need to put the Range Rover or Discovery on a ramp, drain the oil for inspection and remove the sump to look at the moving parts. To get to this point requires 2 hours labour and it will enable us to give you a more accurate quote for reconditioning or repair.
If there is a metallic sludge in the oil, this means that the torque convertor has broken down inside and that swarf is now circulating inside the gearbox and blocking up the filter. When the filter is blocked the oil pump cannot produce the required pressure and this in turn causes the clutches to slip and burn out. Poor pressure also causes stress on the other components especially the oil pump itself which is not being lubricated properly.
Important: Once the convertor starts to break down and metallic particles begin to circulate then the situation can deteriorate quickly. This is why we recommend that you stop driving the car as soon as you
experience any symptoms.
Step 2 - Removal and dismantling.
After inspection and a discussion you may authorise us to remove the gearbox from the car for reconditioning. It takes approximately 6 more hours for our technician to remove the gearbox from your Range Rover or Discovery and dismantle it on the bench. He will inspect all the parts and we will then confirm the exact price for the finished job.
Note: Extra parts may be needed if damage is found. We will invite you into the workshop to see the gearbox in pieces and talk you through the rebuild process or if you prefer we can email or SMS photographs of any damaged parts. If the gearbox was still functioning at the point where you stopped driving the car then there will not usually be any extra parts required.
Step 3 - Rebuilding and refitting.
A reconditioned box includes a new oil pump, torque convertor, a full seal and piston kit, clutches, oil filter, 10 litres of quality automatic transmission fluid and a new upgraded oil cooler. Your gearbox will be carefully rebuilt in a clean environment and by the same qualified technician who dismantled it. Jamie has now rebuilt and repaired over eighty Range Rover and Discovery automatic gearboxes.
When replacing the automatic gearbox we always replace the oil cooler with a new upgraded version. It is very difficult to remove all the debris from the old oil cooler even with modern flushing equipment. It is also
widely accepted that the original Land Rover cooler is too small to do the job. This upgraded cooler is included in the price.
Step 4 - Testing
Once the gearbox has been refitted in the car, set up and calibrated using Land Rover diagnostics we run it in situ with the transfer box in neutral. Once it is functioning properly we then need to keep hold of the vehicle for a further day. We will test drive it and put 100 miles on the clock. This enables us to flush out any small air locks in the oil channels and calibrate the system on our computer.
All gearboxes have a 12 month 12000 mile warranty.

Supply Only
We are often asked to supply automatic gearboxes for fitment by other garages. Unfortunately, expensive mistakes can easily be made when fitting and running the unit. Diagnostics are also required and at the present time we are only supplying units fully fitted and tested at our premises.
