For Discovery 2 Repairs you have landed at the right place, here at K Motors we have been Independent Specialists in Land Rover repairs since 1957.

Although it doesn’t look too dissimilar to the Discovery 1 in appearance the Discovery 2 range was launched in autumn of 1998, in fact the only common body panel was the handle press on the rear tailgate. Under BMW ownership at the time two new engines were introduced the new 5 cylinder turbo diesel Td5 and the 4.0 litre V8 petrol. The Disco 2 had much better road handling courtesy of Self Leveling Suspension and Active Cornering Enhancement along with Electronic Traction Control, Electronic Brake Distribution and Hill Descent Control.

All this new electronic equipment means that most repairs generally start with a diagnostic report to tell you where the faults may lie. As well as our extensive knowledge and experience in Discovery 2 repairs we also have the very latest Autologic diagnostic equipment and technical support to aid in any fault finding. Here we have a list of the more common Discovery 2 faults, symptoms and costs* to repair.

Discovery 2 Repairs – Fuel Pump
Poor starting issues on the Td5 are often down to the fuel pump. A tell tale sign is that the pump will start to become noisy or although once started will idle fine it will struggle when asking for more fuel. Always replace the fuel filter at the same time as this is often the cause of the pump failure with it being blocked. Replace in tank fuel pump (OEM) £269
Discovery 2 Repairs – Fuel Pressure Regulator
A common fault again on the Td5 is a fuel leak, you will notice a puddle on the floor situated towards the back of the engine on the drivers side. This is most likely caused by the fuel pressure regulator, the whole unit will need replacing. Replace fuel pressure regulator (OEM) £233
Discovery 2 Repairs – Starter Motor
As a result of the fuel pressure regulator leaking if it has been happening for a while then you may find the starter motor will start working intermittently this is due to it filling with diesel and will need replacing. Replace starter motor (OEM) £280
Discovery 2 Repairs – Shuttle valve ABS
Affectionately known as the ‘3 Amigos’ the ABS, Traction Control and Hill Descent warning lights on the dash will be permanently illuminated. Most common cause is a faulty shuttle valve switch on the ABS module. Replace ABS shuttle valve (OEM) £205
Discovery 2 Repairs – Fuel Injector Loom Harness
A well reported issue on the Td5 engine is a misfire which is caused by oil forcing its way down the injector harness and into the ECU. To check pull the red connector off the ECU (next to the battery) and look for evidence of oil, if there is any then the loom needs replacing Replace fuel injector wiring loom (OEM) £150
Discovery 2 Repairs – Fuel Injector Seals & Washers
Another cause of poor running or difficult starting can be the injector seals and washers leaking, it is not uncommon for them to perish with age. Always replace with genuine LR seals as they are made of a composite material and not just rubber so last much longer. Replace fuel injector seals and washers (Genuine LR) £300
Discovery 2 Repairs – Water Pump
Loss of coolant is generally caused by a faulty water pump, it can leak between the cover and pump or pulley drive and pump. In extreme cases the internal bearing can fail in the pump itself. It is not a servicable part and will need replacing. Replace water pump (OEM) £210
Discovery 2 Repairs – Rear Suspension Air Springs
If the vehicle drops at the rear overnight then the chances are that one of the suspension air bags has a leak. Over time either the rubber can crack but most commonly it is where the spring rolls over itself. To test put the suspension in extended mode and spray the air bags with soapy water and look for bubbles to show the leak. Rear suspension air spring (single OEM) £120
Rear suspension air springs (both OEM) £235
Discovery 2 Repairs – Air Suspension Compressor
If the suspension has been dropping for a while due to a leak then the air compressor pump works much harder constantly pumping air to keep the vehicle level. Although they are generally reliable this extra work can cause them to fail prematurely. Replace air suspension compressor (OEM) £430
Discovery 2 Repairs – Front Shock Absorber Lower Bushes
Although the suspension components are pretty hard wearing this is a heavy vehicle and the most common MOT failure is the front lower shock absorber bushes. Often difficult to tell when driving the car but on inspection you can see that the rubber bush separates from the metal casing. Replace front shock absorber lower bushes (OEM) £110
Discovery 2 Repairs – Front Brake Pad Replacement
If low pads are spotted early before any damage is caused to the disc then just the pads can be changed. Generally once the warning light has come on it is too late and discs will need to be changed also. Front brake pads replacement (both sides OEM) £95
Discovery 2 Repairs – Front Brake Discs and Pads
If brake pads have worn low and scored the discs then it is advisable to change both for optimum performance. The average life of brake discs is around 32,000 miles after this they are considered too thin and will have a lip around the edge where just fitting new pads will take too long to bed in and most likely cause a squealing sound each time you apply the brakes. Front brake discs and pads replacement (Both sides) £205
Discovery 2 Repairs – Rear Brake Pad Replacement
If low pads are spotted early before any damage is caused to the disc then just the pads can be changed. Generally once the warning light has come on it is too late and discs will need to be changed also. Rear brake pads replacement (both sides OEM) £85
Discovery 2 Repairs – Rear Brake Discs and Pads
If brake pads have worn low and scored the discs then it is advisable to change both for optimum performance. The average life of brake discs is around 32,000 miles after this they are considered too thin and will have a lip around the edge where just fitting new pads will take too long to bed in and most likely cause a squealing sound each time you apply the brakes. Rear brake discs and pads replacement (Both sides) £185
Discovery 2 Repairs – Clutch Replacement
A slipping clutch will cause the engine to rev higher while the vehicle does not accelerate as quickly. Another sign that the clutch is failing is that the indicator on the dash which informs of the gear the vehicle is in is slow to react when you change gear. Replace clutch cover, clutch plate release bearing (OEM) £495
Discovery 2 Repairs – Clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel Replacement
A dual mass flywheel absorbs the vibration from the engine and rarely outlasts a clutch, we would always advise replacing both at the same time. Replace clutch cover, clutch plate, release bearing and flywheel (OEM) £850
